Someone commented on LinkedIn that
the only people who still believe in LLMs for non-Search Engine use are idiots
or crooks.
Leaving the crooks to their snake
oil, maybe not idiots, but people who have a lot to learn about what their
Unconscious Mind gets up to. They don’t realise that something is working very
hard to make things look easy. We have to do the same thing with a machine – we
have 90,000 definitions, and for a while we will need to stick to bounded
problems (a thousand-page piece of legislation perhaps – the BBB is 940 pages –
too big for most legislators to bother reading – too important not to read
carefully).
Can the meaning of a word be
determined by propinquity alone? Maybe some of the time, as long as unreliability or hallucinations aren’t a problem. That does not apply to documents moving trillions of dollars around,
or specifying projects in the hundreds of billions. These are documents beyond human ability to comprehend in their entirety without considerable help.
